Skye Denison, the school psycholgist is elated that there is now a new bookstore in town "Tales and Treats". Her various relatives are having a rough time accepting this new addition to the shops in Scumble River. A former student of Skye's (Kayla) is found murdered in the new bookstore with a rare book bookshelving unit pushed over on her body. The question becomes who was the inteded victim - was it the owner (Rise) or Kayla.? Simon Reid is still trying to win back Skye's heart although she is still engaged to Police Chief Wally. Wally and Skye are searching for the murderer. The characteris in this book are as zany as usual. I love reading Denise Swanson's murder mysteries. Whenever I pick up a new murder mystery series I always end up comparing it to the Scumble River series!
This newest installment starts off with the opening of a new bookstore in town, called Tales and Treats. A murder happens there (of course) and Skye begins to wonder if the murder victim was the intended victim.
I love reading about the romance between Skye and the police chief Wally Boyd. And having Skye ex-boyfriend running around trying to win her back is just plain fun!
I love Denises Scumble River mystery series. Murder of a Bookstore
Babe seemed a little more intense than the others which is cool. I like
the fact that she keeps you wondering about Simon and Wally. Can't wait
for the next one.
Murder of a Bookstore Babe is your typical cozy mystery with the leading character being a female amateur sleuth. In this case, the leading lady & amateur sleuth is school psychologist Skye Denison, who also spotlights as a consultant for the local police department. For the most part, I enjoyed the character of Skye Denison as well as the rest of the characters... Some of the characters were a bit annoying, but nothing one couldn't get past. Murder of a Bookstore Babe started off a bit slow, but picked up speed and kept my attention throughout the rest of the novel.I enjoyed the mystery part of this novel, but the wishy-washy-prudishness of the main character didn't make me a fan. This was another great read by Denise Swanson. I love her Scumble River series and look forwards to each new addition. Despite the editorial tacky review, I found the book to be witty and easy to bury myself in. Can't wait to read her next book! This is my first and last book I will read from this author. Bad dime store romance or just bad mystery? I wish I could get my time and money back. What did she have, a word minimum? Where is the character development? Try the Cupcake Bakery series by Jenn McKinlay, more fun and recipes to boot. While school psychologist Skye Denison is thrilled that a new bookstore is opening in town, not everyone else is and several people are trying to shut it down. When someone is murdered there it looks like they might get their wish. Skye has worked with the police department before (and is engaged to Police Chief Wally Boyd) and agrees to help interview several suspects as they are all members of her family. Could someone in her family be the killer?
"Murder of a Bookstore Babe" is the enjoyable 13th book in Denise Swanson's Scumble River cozy mystery series. Skye Denison is a character who has grown on me over the course of the series and I always enjoy my visits back to Scumble River. Skye's large and complex family plays a major role in this book and Swanson walks a fine line with some of the characters who are a bit too much, almost too eccentric, but still believable. The Tales and Treats Bookstore is a nice setting - a place I'd visit if it existed in real life. The mystery itself is so-so with some predictable moments yet a few plot twists. I did figure out one major plot point very early in the book yet was still surprised at who the killer was and the ultimate motive. There are plenty of suspects, in fact too many, and that plot device seems more of a way to bring Skye's large family into the book. Also, an encounter with a family which led to a major clue seemed a little too convenient. Still, while the mystery is a bit thin, the characters and setting are what makes this book (and the entire series) worth reading. The one character who really annoys me is Simon. I guess his attempts to win Skye back are supposed to be amusing but they are way over the top and very childish at times.Skye is very excited when she finds out when a bookstore is going to open up but some of the other people in the community were not happy about it opening up.
Some of Skyes fellow teachers are even protesting the bookstore opening up, and wanted Skye to sign a petition to keep it out of town.
Rise is the new owner, and she is a happy but troubled woman with a husband that has PTSD from the war. Skye is enjoying the Grand Opening but some people try to wreak it by letting out her pet Chinchillas and starting trouble in general.
Later Skye is going to meet the owners' husband about some rare books she had in the attic and finds the door unlatched, and Rise under a heavy bookcase dead.
Later it is found out is is not Rise but Kayla, a young student that was employeed at the store.
Wally and Skye investigate and find out that the bookstore had investors and some of them are close to home.
Skye and Wally get into the thick of things with Simon, Bunny and others included..
I love these books except for Skyes mother.. I am tired of her trying to rule Skyes life and Skye taking it. Murder of a Bookstore Babe is one of the best cozy mysteries I've read in quite awhile. I haven't read this series before, but now I'm going to read all the books in the series. I don't know how I missed this great series!
I loved the character Skye, and I have to say she sure has a way with words. I laughed out loud many times and that is always a great thing for me. I loved her interactions with the young people in the book and found the kids' characters to be exactly like kids really are. She speaks kid language perfectly. I also loved her mother May and the exchanges between her and Skye. That Skye is a police consultant gives her a reason for sleuthing that is real and gives her a credibility that many cozy mystery sleuths don't have. This makes Skye all the more believable as a character. Her exchange with the high school principle alone was worth the price of the book. The scene totally cracked me up.
This was just an all around good, fun book. As you can tell, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The pages flew for me, and I was sad to finish it. I am so happy to have the whole series to look forward to. I can't wait to start reading them and will be first in line for the next book when it comes out. This series is a keeper for sure! This was the first book I read in the Scumble River Series. From the book title chapter headings to the engaging characters, especially Skye; this is a book series I will definitely read more of. This is the 13th book and this series is still going strong. I love Skye's character. She is extremely easy to relate to. The only complaint I have is that her mother was extremely annoying this time around. Other than that the book was a winner!
